Osteopathy deals with the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system. It seeks to find the underlying cause or causes of a patient’s problem and addresses not only the areas of concern but also the interconnected areas. It takes a whole body view in its approach to treatment. It is suitable for all ages and a wide range of conditions.
Osteopaths use a variety of non-invasive techniques including soft tissue massage on muscles, gentle mobilisation of joints, manipulation, cranial treatment, stretching and exercises. Treatment is always tailored to the individual and their particular problem.
Sports Injury Treatment
Osteopathy looks at how the body functions as a whole, so, as well as treating a sports injury, the Osteopath will assess its cause and address that to provide a lasting solution. For example, common running injuries such as shin splints or plantar fasciitis are often due to poor foot mechanics, therefore addressing shoe type or providing insoles could be a key part of treatment. Sessions may also include acupuncture or sports taping, as appropriate. Osteopathy is also of benefit in helping to prevent injury occurring. Helping joints and muscles to function optimally is the best way to prevent injury.
